Local philanthropist B.W. "Bill" Harrison was recognized for his contributions and accomplishments during his 90th birthday celebration Sunday.

About 200 people attended the event held at Drury Lodge in Cape Girardeau and sponsored by Iowa Rep. Clarence Hoffman and Lynn Hoffman.

Wayne Davenport recognized Harrison for contributions to Southeast Missouri State University, including the donation if $800,000 in stocks to make the purchase of the old St. Vincent Seminary by Southeast Missouri State University possible in 1998.

Harrison, a retired supervisor for the state agricultural extension service, was presented a framed copy of a resolution offered by state Sen. Peter Kinder and passed by the Missouri Senate recognizing Harrison's many accomplishments. Hoffman presented a framed certificate signed by the speaker of the Iowa House of Representatives honoring Harrison.
