EAST ALTON, Ill. -- A man who police say vandalized a church and school because he was angry at God was charged Thursday with burglary, authorities said.

Jonathan Fluck, 21, faces up to 15 years if convicted of all four counts of burglary, said Madison County Sheriff's Detective John Lakin.

Police say the man broke into St. Kevin's Catholic School and a neighboring church four times Monday and caused $20,000 in damages.

"He's a very angry young man who is apparently angry with God," Lakin said.

He "decided to take that anger out on a church and a school."

The vandal broke windows and religious statues, emptied fire extinguishers, urinated on the church's altar and wrote graffiti in classrooms, according to school officials.

A life-sized statue of the Virgin Mary was tossed down a stairway and broken, according to school officials.

Detectives arrested Fluck on Wednesday about five blocks from the church.

Lakin said they matched Fluck's size 16 tennis shoes with prints left at the scene.
