KENNETT, Mo. -- A man died early Sunday morning after being taken into custody by Kennett police.

At 12:31 a.m., police pulled over the man, whose name has not been released, at the intersection of Baldwin and Clipper Streets, according to a news release from the Kennett Police Department.

Police say the man left the vehicle and fled from officers. Pursuing officers found him hiding behind a house in the 600 block of North Jackson Street. He was arrested without further incident.

When he arrived at the Kennett Police Department, the suspect began complaining of shortness of breath, the news release stated. Medic One Ambulance service was called to take the man to Twin Rivers Regional Medical Center.

After arriving at the hospital, the man became unresponsive and died.

The police department has asked the Missouri State Highway Patrol to conduct an investigation.
