KIRKSVILLE, Mo. -- A man participating in the Northeast Missouri Triathlon died after finishing the swimming portion of the event.

Kevin Sean Martin, 34, of Kirksville, collapsed Sunday after he swam three-quarters of a mile. He was taken to Northeast Regional Medical Center, where he died.

Adair County Coroner Brian Noe said an autopsy showed Martin died of a ruptured aorta.

Martin was a student at A.T. Still University, a health sciences school. He is survived by his wife and two children.

A funeral Mass for Martin, originally from St. Peters, is scheduled for Saturday in south St. Louis.
