MARBLE HILL, Mo. -- Marble Hill voters will decide this June whether to reclassify a sales tax passed in 2010.

The Marble Hill Board of Aldermen recently passed an ordinance to hold an election in June asking voters to change the half-cent tax increase approved in August 2010 from a capital improvement tax to a general, all-purpose tax to go directly into general revenue.

City attorney Alan Bussink presented an ordinance that would put the issue to the voters in June, so that collections could begin in August. It will cost the city $2,000 to pay for the election, and the issue would be the only item on the ballot.

After the board voted unanimously to offer the issue on the June ballot, Mayor pro tem James Sear said that voters must understand that they would not be voting for an additional tax. If the measure passes, then the capital improvement tax will dissolve. If not, then the capital improvement tax will remain.

"This change will make it possible to be more flexible," he said. "We need more flexibility because of the way things are getting tight in the city."
