Memorial to fallen police to be unveiled next month

A group of law enforcement officers and senior citizens plan to unveil next month a memorial honoring 48 fallen officers with ties to Southeast Missouri.

The memorial, which is replacing an existing monument at Cape County Park North, will consist of three black granite panels and a separate panel containing a poem about fallen officers. The three panels will be 4 1/2 feet tall while the panel with the poem will be 2 feet tall.

Names of the officers killed in the line of duty will be etched on the panels, including their department and date of death. Representatives of Seniors and Lawmen Together raised the money with donations from individuals, family members of fallen officers and organizations. Formed in 1995, SALT holds monthly meetings and special events to promote interaction between seniors and law enforcement.

Members of SALT presented their idea during today's Cape Girardeau County Commission meeting.

The memorial will be unveiled during the organization's annual memorial service scheduled for 10 a.m. May 14 at Cape County Park North.
