JEFFERSON CITY -- On June 7 and 8 fishing in Missouri will be among the things in life that are available free of charge. On those two days anyone in the state can fish at Missouri Department of Conservation areas and most other places without having to buy a fishing permit.
The MDC has designated the first full weekend in June Free Fishing Days to encourage people to take advantage of fishing opportunities in the Show-me State. On those two days, the MDC suspends the requirement for fishing permits, trout permits and daily tags. Special permits may still be needed at some county, city or private areas, but fishing is free in most waters of the state. This includes the state's four trout parks, where daily tags will be issued free of charge.
The MDC doesn't suspend all fishing rules during Free Fishing Days, however. Normal regulations, such as size and daily limits, still apply.
Free Fishing Days in Missouri coincides with National Fishing Week, whose theme is "Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs." The proclamation setting aside Free Fishing Days, to be signed by Gov. Mel Carnahan May 29, recognizes the material and aesthetic benefits of fishing.
