A 24-foot motor home outside a residence at 1217 N. Water St. was a complete loss after a fire raced through it at 3:07 p.m. Sunday, Cape Girardeau Fire Department battalion chief Mark Starnes said. No one was injured.

The motor home was being lived in up until recently while the owners were having their house remodeled, Starnes said. The residents had moved back into the house a couple of months ago, and meanwhile, the motor home's battery died, he said.

Starnes said a mechanical issue in the motor home was the culprit. The owner put the battery on a charger, started the motor home, then let it run so it would charge, Starnes said. The owner went inside the house for a few minutes, then noticed fire beneath the motor home's dashboard, Starnes said.
