Students at Notre Dame Regional High School raised a record $134,000 for the school last week.

The school's 486 students sold items such as magazine subscriptions and candy, held dinners and washed cars to raise the money to help offset operating expenses at the Catholic school.

The school dinners during the annual Activity Week accounted for a lot of the money. "We served almost 3,000 people last week," said Tony Buehrle, the school's development director.

Last year, students raised a then-record $109,000 during Activity Week, he said.

The $134,000 is the profit for the school after expenses, Buehrle said.

During Activity Week, the four classes compete to see which class raises the most money per capita.

The senior class won this year, raising more than $400 per student. As a result, the senior class had its king and queen candidates crowned at a school dance.

Freshmen raised nearly $256 per capita; sophomores, $234; and juniors, $224.

The senior class brought in the most money -- $42,890. Freshmen raised $34,579, followed by sophomores with $31,163 and juniors with $25,538.

Buehrle attributed the school's fund-raising success to its students, staff, parents and alumni.

"This is a 40-year tradition," he said of the school's fund-raising Activity Week.
