Officials investigate cause of hay fire in Cape County
After hundreds of hay bales caught fire early Thursday morning in Cape Girardeau County, East County Fire Protection District officials say the only thing left to do now is let them "burn out." According to assistant fire chief Kelly Allen, crews responded to the call which came in just before 5:30 a.m. and are still on the scene at the intersection of County Roads 635 and 637. After hundreds of hay bales caught fire early Thursday morning in Cape Girardeau County, East County Fire Protection District officials say the only thing left to do now is let them "burn out."
According to assistant fire chief Kelly Allen, crews responded to the call, which came in just before 5:30 a.m. about a fire at the intersection of county roads 635 and 637. Allen said about 400 bales burned.
He said the cause of the fire still is being investigated. No injuries or other property damage was reported.

County Road 635 was closed early Thursday morning for about an hour, Allen said, but is back open to traffic.
