The Southeast Missourian asked people how they felt about giving their first 123 days of income to Uncle Sam. Today is Tax Freedom Day, the 124th day of the year.

Melvin Porter said, "I don't like it and it doesn't seem fair. But at the same time do we have any control over it? I am ready for my money to begin going in my pocket now. Actually when you stop and think about it in days it seems worse than it really is."

Richie Wischmann said, "I didn't realize it was actually that high, but I knew it was up there. In some ways it may not be the best, but on a larger scale, worldwide, it is one of the best there is. In that aspect it isn't too bad. Overall I don't mind it that much."

Laurie Koeing said, "I never really looked at it in the amount of days we worked toward paying our taxes, but it's necessary and as a citizen we are expected to do our part. Of course I'd like it to be less but it isn't up to me and until it changes I'll do what I have to."

Alan Williams said, "I had no idea it was anywhere close to that many days. That is new to me. I feel very upset and I am glad tomorrow is here and I can start making money for myself and my family instead of giving it to the government. I give too much now."

Ron Clayton said, "It may seem to some that is a great deal of money to pay unless you stop and think about all of the things you get in return - the education system, roads, law enforcement, and public services that our tax supports. You get what you pay for."

Rick Youngblood said, "I think we must look at it from the aspect of what we get in return. Sure 123 days seems like a lot but the government is responsible for a lot of things. I'm sure everyone would like the number of days to be less but it's part of our country."
