Haubold chosen for statewide committee

Charlie Haubold has been selected as a member of the state-wide Missouri School Boards Association (MSBA) Legislative Policy Committee.

Junior Beta Club welcomes new members

The Kelso Junior Beta Club recently welcomed Craig Tetley, Steven Atkinson, Ashlee Glastetter, Brittany Licare, Tyler Beardsless and Evan Reischman as new members for the 2002/2003 school year.

This year's executive panel is Kristain Burger, president; Brittany Kern, vice-president; secretary, Jessica Dock; and treasurer, Nora Glassner.

Scholarship funds made available

High school seniors in Missouri may apply on-line for the Horatio Alger Missouri Scholarship through Oct. 15 at www.horatioalger.org/scholarships.

A total of $250,000 is available and will be awarded to 100 students throughout the state.

Southeast student helps in Pentagon renovation

Southeast Missouri State University student Natalie Raeder of Washington D.C., spent last summer working with the Pentagon Renovation Program to restore the building after last year's terrorist attacks.

Raeder is an interior design major who will graduate this December.

She worked with 3-D International of Washington D.C., which was contracted to perform the renovation of the Pentagon even before the terrorist attacks, to complete an interior design internship for her degree.

4-H/FFA speech contest winners announced

The winners of the 4-H/FFA speech contest held during the 147th annual SEMO District Fair were: first place, Sherry Kuehn, Jackson FFA; second place, Zach Ruesley, Progressive 4-H; third place, Erica Boushie, Fredericktown FFA; and fourth place, Travis Randolph, Oran FFA.

Association seeks essay contest entries

The U.S. Rice Producers Association, a nonprofit association representing rice farmers in Missouri and other states, is sponsoring an essay contest for students in grades 4-12.

The essay contest will include a winner from each grade receiving $100 and each winner's classroom or computer lab will receive $500.

Alternative center to have back-to-school night

Parents of students attending the Alternative Education Center are invited to a back-to-school night from 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 1000 S. Ranney.

A brief welcome will be held and parents will be able to tour the school and meet with their students' teachers.

Childhood seminar scheduled for Sept. 21

A daylong seminar on early childhood will be held on Sept. 21 at Southeast Missouri State University's Dempster Hall.

The seminar, "Discipline for Life: Getting it Right with Children," will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Madelyn Swift, a nationally known author, speaker and expert on discipline, family dynamics and personal communication, will present the keynote session.

She is president of Childright, an educational consulting firm which provides training to parents and educators.

The event is sponsored by Child Care Resources and Referral of Southeast Missouri and Success by 6, an early childhood initiative coordinated by the Area Wide United Way.
