JONESBORO, Ill. -- A Union County Sheriff's spokesman said Wednesday no charges have been filed against a possible suspect in double homicide.

Police found the bodies of Robert Pitts Sr., 45, and his wife, Marcia, 43, at about 7 a.m. Friday in their residence at 107 N. Acre Lane in Jonesboro.

Union County Sheriff David Livesay said Tuesday in a statement that the couple appeared to have been fatally shot, and that the small-caliber handgun used in the killings had not been found despite searches of the victims' home, the surrounding neighborhood and Jonesboro Park.

The suspect is in Union County Jail charged with felony residential burglary and felony theft Tuesday for an incident that took place Dec. 19, according to court documents.

He was arrested Friday, a sheriff's spokesman said Wednesday.

Livesay said the charges are not at this point related to the homicides.

Investigators are still searching for the weapon used in the slayings.

Suspecting the gun still may be hidden in the neighborhood, Livesay urged residents to use caution and call authorities if they should encounter the weapon in their daily routine.

"It is important to note that the authorities are not requesting that anyone actively search for the weapon, but only that people use great care and caution should it accidentally be discovered," Livesay said.
