Police have confirmed the identity of the man shot in connection with a domestic dispute in the area of College and Louis streets as Corey Shannon, 28, of Cape Girardeau.

A witness at the scene, Catrice Moore, claiming to be the shooting victim’s cousin, said the victim was in a physical altercation with a female, when the female’s father shot him.

Cape Girardeau Police Department Sgt. Barry Hovis confirmed that Shannon had been shot in the lower back and buttocks at least once. Hovis said witnesses told police there was an altercation that led to a shooting, and a person was in police custody. Hovis said the shooting was still under review as to whether it was criminal or in self-defense.

Police believe Shannon was shot on College Street, according to Hovis, then fled to the 600 block of Louis Street to look for a ride. The victim was transported to a local hospital in a private vehicle after asking several residents on Louis Street for a ride.

Witnesses at the scene paint a picture of a wounded man scrambling for a ride to the hospital just after shots were fired around 5:05 p.m.

One witness, Carl Amos, said he encountered the wounded man while he was in the backyard at 615 Louis St. The man asked for a ride to the hospital, and when Amos refused, scrambled around to the front of the residence.

Another witness, Brian Vogel of 627 Louis St., said a heavy-set black male in a T-shirt and blue jeans was harassing his mother, demanding a ride to the hospital, when she arrived home just after 5 p.m.

Marie Stearns of 624 Louis St. said she was on her porch when the man apparoched her, said he had been shot and asked for a ride. According to Stearns, the man lifted his T-shirt to show where he had been shot in the lower back.

Blake Pope said he was the one who took the wounded man to the hospital. The man told Pope had been shot three times in the lower back. When asked why he gave the shooting victim transportation, Pope said “Because I’m a good guy.”

Pope was busy trying to clean a large amount of blood off of his car’s passenger seat when he talked to the Southeast Missourian.
