KENNETT, Mo. -- According to a statement released by assistant police chief Steve Williams, police responded to an apparent homicide at 2:20 p.m. Sunday at 226 W. Ninth St.

When police arrived at the scene, according to the statement, they were told that family members had found the body an unresponsive woman, whose name had not been released as of 7:30 a.m. Monday.

The officers found the woman's body lying in the front room of the house, the apparent victim of a homicide.

The Dunklin County Major Case Squad was called to the scene, along with the Bootheel Drug Task Force, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol Division of Drug and Crime Control to begin an investigation.

The police statement reads, "After gathering evidence at the crime scene, the body of the woman was removed from the scene by the Dunklin County coroner Jack Adkins. An autopsy is scheduled for early this morning."

According to Williams' report, no arrests have been made and the investigation is still underway.
