JACKSON -- American Legion Post #158 and VFW Post #104595 and its auxiliary of Jackson will host a memorial walk Saturday as part of POW-MIA Week.
The purpose of the walk is to remember and pay tribute to prisoners of war and those still missing in action. Small American flags will be distributed to the walkers as they parade to the Brookside Park Veterans' Memorial, where a short program will be held.
Speaking at the program will be Lt. Cmdr. Mark Steiner, son of Bernice and the late Gilbert Steiner of Pocahontas. Steiner was commissioned as a U.S. Navy Chaplain in 1988 and has participated in three deployments to the Persian Gulf, including the time during Operation Desert Storm.
He currently serves as the Command Chaplain of the First Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters Group in San Diego, Calif.
People attending the program are asked to bring lawn chairs. The Avenue of Flags will also be on display that day. Anyone wishing to participate in the walk should assemble at the American Legion Hall at 1:30 p.m. The walk still will be held in the event of rain.
