Judges were impressed with the originality, workmanship and embellishments displayed in the entries at the River Heritage Quilt Show in Cape Girardeau.

More than 93 quilts were entered, and several dozen more are part of traveling exhibits that include quilts from around the world and quilts with patriotic themes.

The show continues today from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Family Life Center at Centenary United Methodist Church, 300 N. Ellis St.

Admission is $4.

Ribbons are awarded for first, second and third place and honorable mention in seven categories.

Lynne Taylor of Cape Girardeau was awarded the Tenna K. Henning Award for excellence in machine quilting and the Best of Show Award. Her quilt "Christmas Magic" wowed judges with its originality and design, said Jane Stodghill of the River Heritage Quilters Guild.

Pieced quilts: Frances Tankersley of Jackson, Tenn., first place; Mary K. Reed of Jonesboro, Ill., second place; Betty Autry of Bell City, Mo., third place; and Nancy Pleimann of Jackson, honorable mention.

Applique: Judy Robinson of Cape Girardeau, first place and judge's choice; Wanita Morrow of Osceola, Mo., second place; Frances Tankersley, third place; and Dorothy Wibbenmeyer of Perryville, Mo., honorable mention.

Group: Shawnee Quilt Guild of Carterville, Ill., first place; Margaret and Berniece Blattel of Oran, Mo., second place; Jocelyn Kasten and St. Paul Quilters of Jackson, third place; Lynne Taylor and Frieda Lorenz, honorable mention.

Other techniques: Darlene Jackson of Frohna, Mo., first place; Carolyn Andrews of Chaffee, Mo., second place; Aldyth Gragg of Cape Girar-deau, third place.

Miniature: Madeline Gieselman of Millersville, first place; Connie Chunn of Webster Groves, Mo., second place; Judy Robinson of Cape Girar-deau, third place; and Rita Whaley, honorable mention.

Wall hangings: Sherie Grob of Murphysboro, Ill., first place; Mary K. Reed, second place; Mary Brown of Bell City, third place and Rita Whaley, honorable mention.

Theme: Mary L. Hackett of Carterville, Ill., first place; Rita Whaley of Jackson, second place; Mary Lou McNair of Daphne, Ala., third place; and Nancy Ross of Cape Girardeau, honorable mention.

There is also a quilt raffle to help raise funds for breast-cancer research. Bids for the wall-hanging quilts will be accepted through 3 p.m. today. The funds, which generally amount to around $1,200 and $1,300 yearly, are used locally, Stodghill said.
