Poplar Bluff files to reclaim debt

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- Legal documents were filed Tuesday for the city of Poplar Bluff to reclaim ownership of about $200,000 in debt owed by Poplar Bluff Internet. About $200 has been paid to date on the debt, which has been outstanding for more than 1,600 days. Court filings and legal maneuvering have stalled most of the city's attempts at collection. A little less than a year ago, a judge ruled the debt was sold with the city cable division. The city and Telecommunications Management denied this, but assignment of the debt was not spelled out in the sale. The clarification was signed by Telecommunications Management in June, but the documents were not filed with the court until this week. City council members voted in August to move forward with an asset clarification. PBI was owned by Brian Becker of Williamsville, Missouri.
