Tennessee chase ends with arrest in Missouri

NEW MADRID, Mo. -- A St. Louis man is in custody in the New Madrid County Jail following his arrest early Monday.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Renard Smith, 34, was fleeing authorities from Tennessee but his luck ran out when he came to Missouri.

Smith, who was arrested at 6:30 a.m., has charges of burglary and resisting arrest pending in Dyersburg, Tenn. He has been charged with property damage and resisting arrest by fleeing felony.

The New Madrid County Sheriff's Department reported the chase began when a Dyersburg, Tenn., police officer observed the subject in a business. The man fled the scene in his vehicle and a pursuit began on Interstate 55 into Missouri.

Pemiscot County sheriff's deputies joined the pursuit in Missouri and as the vehicle entered New Madrid County.

Traffic stop may lead to drug charges

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- A Poplar Bluff man could face drug charges after allegedly being in possession of nearly 10 rocks of suspected crack cocaine.

According to Poplar Bluff Police patrolman Jerry Keirsey's report, he stopped a 1988 Dodge Caravan at about 4:55 p.m. Saturday for a traffic violation.

The driver, Maurice Deshane Shaw, noticed a juvenile passenger was making unusual movements. Shaw, 22, reportedly gave officers consent to search his vehicle.

A search of the 13-year-old Poplar Bluff boy found a plastic bag containing eight rock-like substances believed to be crack cocaine, Keirsey said.

Shaw was arrested on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute. He was booked and released pending the lab results. The juvenile was taken to the police station and released to his mother.

12-year-old recovering from weekend assault

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- A 12-year-old boy was treated for a busted eardrum Saturday afternoon after he was allegedly assaulted by three juvenile boys.

According to reports, the victim was allegedly beaten by three boys, ages 11, 12 and 13, at about 5:15 p.m. on North Main Street.

The suspects reportedly began verbally taunting the victim, but then the altercation turned physical, the report said.

The victim was taken to Three Rivers Healthcare-South Campus.

Sand ends river jet ski trip early for Georgia pair

CARUTHERSVILLE, Mo. -- An adventure on the Mississippi was cut short for two jet skiers.

Pemiscot County sheriff's deputies received a report Friday evening of two people stranded on the Mississippi River. The Pemiscot County Rescue Squad was activated and was able to recover the individuals and their jet skis.

The pair told officers they were from Georgia and had begun a jet ski trip in Memphis en route to Iowa. Their jet skis became inoperable when a filter became loaded with sand after going too close to a sand bar.

Man dies during alleged burglary attempt

MILLERSBURG, Mo. -- Charges have been filed against two men after an accomplice died during an alleged robbery attempt, authorities said.

The Callaway County Sheriff's Department said Jonathan Ryan Gramling, 18, of Sturgeon was killed early Friday when a resident of the Millersburg home he was breaking into shot him.

Two other men allegedly involved in the robbery -- David Fike, 20, of Columbia, and Christopher Davis, 19, of Hallsville -- have been charged with first-degree burglary and second-degree murder. The charges are based on their alleged role in a felony that led to the death of another suspect. They remained jailed Tuesday on $100,000 bond.

Authorities have not released the shooter's identity, the type of weapon used or where on his body Gramling was shot.
