Cape Girardeau County Coroner John Carpenter will face at least one opponent in an August Republican primary.

Roger D. Moore, an embalmer at Ford and Sons Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau, Thursday filed for the position of coroner on the Republican ticket.

Moore, a lifelong resident of Cape Girardeau County, has worked for 13 years at Ford and Sons and holds a Missouri funeral directors and embalmers license.

He said Thursday that his employment has trained him well for the position of county coroner.

"Working for a leading funeral home in the county, I am usually involved with 90 percent of the cases, so I might as well get paid for the time being out," he said.

Moore said that, if elected, he would bring professionalism to the office.

"I enjoy working with people and have the touch necessary to deal with them at a difficult time," he said. "I call it professionalism.

"I look forward to winning the primary election and the general election and serving Cape Girardeau County for the next 30 years."

Moore said he plans to run a "good race with no unnecessary name calling. I have nothing against Carpenter, but this is a political position so here I am," he said.

Harold G. Cobb, a Democrat and former Cape Girardeau County coroner, filed for the position earlier this week. Carpenter defeated Cobb for the spot in 1988 after he had served almost 10 years as coroner, winning elections in 1980 and 1984.

Moore is a member of St. Mary's Cathedral in Cape Girardeau; Elks Lodge 639; Travelers Protective Association; and the New Hamburg Jaycees. He graduated from Mid-America College of Funeral Service in 1982.
