Stephanie Drummond and Georgia Rodgers will have their work cut out for them this summer. The two women will be in charge of 40 children during the Salvation Army's Summer Day Camp program to run from June 16 to Aug. 1.
Drummond, Salvation Army Community Center director, said the Christian summer day camp, for children 7 to 12, will offer guidance in a positive direction for the children who attend the camp.
"Camp activities will guide the children in their emotional, physical and spiritual development," she said. "It will also prepare them for entering the Salvation Army's fall youth programs."
Rodgers, who is a member of the Salvation Army Church, said she wanted to work with the program because she loves children. "We need volunteers but they must like working with children," she said.
Drummond said, "We need volunteers. They must be mature and responsible. They must be willing to work with children."
Volunteers must be willing to submit to a background check. "With kids you must know who is working with them," said Drummond.
The camp will be geared toward those students who may not be eligible for other structured summer programs.
"Many of the children who come to the camp are too young or can't afford other summer programs," said Drummond. "And many parents feel comfortable with bringing their children to the Salvation Army program because of its church based."
Some of the activities children camp participants can look forward to are field trips, swimming, sports, organized games, arts and crafts, Bible study, educational materials and movies.
"We plan to take a field trip to the library," said Drummond. "The children will even go to the movies."
Everything needed for the camp activities will be provided by the Salvation Army except for transportation. Each child will be asked to bring a sack lunch from home. A fee will be charged for camp participant.
