BENTON, Mo. -- Several burglaries, mostly involving gun thefts, have been reported in rural Scott County, the sheriff's department reported.

"These burglaries are a little early this year," Sgt. Jerry Bledsoe said. "Usually they wait until the Christmas presents are out."

Residences around Benton, Chaffee and Oran in Missouri have been targets, with the crimes generally occurring just after dark.

"They have primarily been taking long guns, but they don't seem to be choosy," Bledsoe said.

At least one burglary took place when a resident was at home, he said.

Suspicious activity should immediately be reported to the sheriff's department, Bledsoe said.

Too often, reports are made only after a burglary has already taken place even though residents have noticed suspicious activity earlier, he said.
