BENTON, Mo. -- Scott County is set to wrap up its blacktopping in this week.

"We plan to do County Road 227 on Monday and Tuesday, and after that, we'll be pretty much on hold," Presiding Commissioner Jamie Burger said while discussing the blacktopping during Thursday's county commission meeting. "We're going to clean the equipment but not put it away. We're going to look at some other issues first and then see what the weather looks like."

Burger said once the road is finished, the road department employees will do "odds and ends" such as trimming and replacing stop signs. If the weather is still conducive to blacktopping once that work is complete, more roadwork may be completed.

So far this year, the county has spent about $550,000 of its allotted $600,000 on materials to fix its roads. That means it has completed just over 14 miles around the county.

"We hope that everybody has seen improvements in their area," Burger said.

Commissioner Donnie Kiefer said the county has blacktopped more this year than in 2009, when about 12 miles were done. He and Burger attributed that to the crews becoming better at installation and marking center lines, among other tasks, guiding the paver and making the materials go further.

Burger also said that if crews noticed a pothole outside of areas blacktopped, they would use the extra material in the truck and fix that patch.
