Southeast Missouri State University is making efforts to improve safety for motor scooter drivers and pedestrians by altering parking.

According to a university news release, motor scooter and motorcycle parking will be changed this week for reasons of safety and to improve traffic circulation in campus parking lots.

"It is hoped that moving the parking areas into a larger, centralized location will improve traffic flow and help reduce interference with pedestrian and vehicle traffic in congested and highly used campus lots and walkways," Doug Richards, director of Southeast's Department of Public Safety, said in the release.

As part of the change, motorcycle and scooter parking slots will be eliminated in four areas: the Seabaugh Polytechnic Building, slots near Dempster Hall and the Scully Building, Kent Library and Vandiver Hall.

New parking will be installed in the lot on Henderson Avenue across from the Parker Building; existing motorcycle parking in the lot will remain.

The department will place staff in the affected areas to help identify new parking slots for scooters and motorcycles drivers.
