What started out as a nutrition program 25 years ago has developed into something much more.

Senior citizens in the area meet with friends, play a game of cards or two and receive a nutritious meal at the Cape Senior Center, 921 N. Clark Ave. The center held an open house Sunday to celebrate the nutrition program's anniversary.

The senior center opened in June 1993 on Clark Ave. And business is booming.

"We currently average 225 meals per day with 90 of those being home deliveries," said Susan McClanahan, administrator of the Cape center.

Herb and Esther Morie were the official greeters for the day. Both volunteer at the center and occasionally join the group for lunch.

Millard and Fern Schlimme began their volunteer work by delivering meals. Fern now serves as one of the cooks.

"The center is really a great place for people who are alone, too," she said.

Many who come to the center to enjoy a meal also volunteer. Jo Williams helps at the reception desk

A non-denominational Bible study program is held each Thursday. And quilters gather each day for their projects. A new craft class is under way.

Williams started the class with its first project, but "others will present crafts they feel comfortable with and then I'll volunteer again to be sure it keeps going," she said.
