Southeast Missouri State University's annual Dugger History Lecture will address the Civil War.

Dr. Earl Hess will present "The Civil War in the West – Why it Mattered" at 8 p.m. today in the University Center ballroom. The event is free and open to the public.

Hess will cover how the Union made the western campaign into the decisive theater of the Civil War and will examine the governmental, military and logistical decisions that occurred.

Hess is an expert on the Civil War and a Southeast alumnus. He serves as the history chairman at Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn.

The lecture is named in honor of longtime Southeast history professor Harold Holmes Dugger.
