Junior and senior high students are invited to participate in the 1996 "Letters about Literature" essay contest.

The contest is sponsored by the Missouri Center for the Book, READ magazine and the national Center for the Book in the U.S. Library of Congress.

The contest's theme is "Books Change Lives." Participants should write a personal letter to an author explaining how the author's book influenced their lives.

One Missouri student will be chosen to represent the state in the national contest. State prizes include $100. The grand prize, offered by READ magazine, is a trip to Washington.

READ magazine is a language arts magazine published by the Weekly Reader Corp. The Missouri Center for the Book is a program of the Missouri State Library.

Essays should be submitted with a coupon by Dec. 8. Coupons can be requested from the Missouri Center for the Book; 600 W. Main.
