ST. LOUIS -- A teenager was charged with second-degree murder Tuesday, accused of a drag-racing accident on a city street that killed two young women in a car that was not involved in the race.

The accident happened Monday afternoon as Quintell O'Neal, 19, of St. Louis, driving a stolen Chrysler Cirrus, raced along Natural Bridge Road near Fairground Park with a Ford F-150 pickup truck, police said. The Chrysler, reportedly going about 90 mph in a 35-mph zone, slammed into a Dodge Neon.

O'Neal was charged with tampering and two counts each of armed criminal action, careless driving by speed, no driver license and no insurance.

The victims were identified Tuesday as Roshanda Wakefield and Anitra McKay, both 18 and both of St. Louis. Three teenage girls who were passengers in the Neon remained hospitalized, one in critical condition, the others in serious condition.

O'Neal is hospitalized. Two passengers in his car, ages 16 and 15, were also hurt. None of their injuries were life-threatening, Police chief Joe Mokwa said. Juvenile authorities were considering charges against the younger men.

The driver of the pickup remained at large.

The Cirrus was stolen Friday in St. Louis, police said.

"I wish I could have done something to help the women," Brasfield said.

"These young cats are joyriding and having fun and they don't care who gets hurt."

Residents of the area said a lot of speeding goes on alongside the park.
