DELTA -- Ward 2 Alderman Daniel Baggett faces an election challenge from James "Ronnie" Howell in Tuesday's municipal election. It is the only contested race for municipal office in Delta.

Mayor Gary Anderson, City Collector Kay Keesee and Ward 1 Alderman Donna McClard are running unopposed.

Baggett, a minister with the Church of God of Prophecy in Delta, has served as alderman since being appointed to fill an unexpired term in January. He is seeking election to a full, two-year term.

Baggett said he wishes more residents in the city of 450 people would get involved in community affairs. "We have a real nice community building here. I would like to see it used more," he said.

The city is working to improve its water system through construction of a new well, Baggett said.

"A lot of people will complain, but they won't take the initiative to run and make improvements," he said.

Howell, a district manager for Plaza Tire, wants to see the board work to foster economic development.

"I just thought it would be a good idea," he said of his decision to run.

Howell said there are no major issues in the election contest.
