Three Community Spirit awards will be presented at the Area Wide United Way annual meeting Tuesday.

More than 100 business representatives, campaign volunteers and agency representatives will attend the event, which begins at noon at the Drury Lodge in Cape Girardeau.

Dave Courvoisier of KFVS12 will emcee the event and present the spirit awards.

Last year marked the first year for the spirit awards.

The awards are designed to recognize one outstanding community volunteer, a local business and a local agency funded by the United Way, said Nancy Jernigan, executive director of the community-assistance organization that serves Cape Girardeau, Jackson and Scott City.

The awards are:

Spirit of Giving Award, presented to an individual who has shown a strong commitment to the mission of the United Way through the contribution of time and financial resources. The 2001 winner was Harry Rediger.

Spirit of Community Award, presented to a company in the community that has been a leader in supporting the work of the United Way and has been an active member of the community in promoting health and well-being. The 2001 recipient was Procter & Gamble.

Spirit of Caring Award, for a United Way funded agency that promotes, supports and embraces the work of the United Way and has partnered with it to promote the quality of life in the community. The 2001 recipient was the American Red Cross.
