WASHINGTON -- The Department of Veterans Affairs has awarded the state of Missouri $11 million in grants to develop two veterans cemeteries, the state's U.S. senators said Thursday.

The grants will cover all of the costs of developing the two cemeteries, one in Jacksonville, the other in Bloomfield, Sens. Kit Bond and Jean Carnahan said.

The Jacksonville cemetery, to be built on 60 acres in the town about 45 miles north of Columbia, will have capacity for nearly 13,000 in-ground burials or cremated remains, the senators said.

The 38-acre cemetery in Bloomfield, the county seat of Stoddard County, about 35 miles southwest of Cape Girardeau, will have capacity for nearly 12,000 in-ground burial sites and cremated remains, Bond said.
