A year ago Robyn White took over chairmanship of the Jackson MS Walk and expanded the annual event to a regional one.

More than 400 walkers took part, raising some $45,000 for multiple sclerosis programs. This year White hopes to see the number of walkers double for the April 1 walk.

"I'd like to double that 400," White said. "We have a goal of maybe $50,000, but we're setting goals more on the number of walkers than on the money."

The two-mile walk will begin at 1 p.m. at the A.C. Brase Arena in Cape Girardeau. Pre-registration will be at noon. A free barbecue lunch and live entertainment will then be provided for pledged walkers. The Cape Girardeau Kiwanis Club and First General Baptist Church of Jackson will provide the meal.

White, an MS survivor, pointed to four new programs made possible by last year's walk. The foremost of the programs is aquatics.

"Aquatics is the best therapy an MS patient can take," White said.

Other than the weekly aquatics program, a symptom's management seminar will be held Wednesday at St. Francis Medical Center, and newly diagnosed and care partner programs are available.

"There are so many programs available," White said. "This walk will provide for them at a local level."

Another array of local and regional politicians, as well as walkers of all ages, are expected. Walkers may walk and solicit pledges individually or in teams. Those interested may contact White at 243-3913.

"We need people to come out and participate and to continue to support MS programs," White said. "We also want people to come out and have a good time."
