Work on the Cape Meadows storm-water project will begin Monday after the city officially breaks ground on the project.
Cape Girardeau Mayor Al Spradling and contractors will participate in a groundbreaking ceremony at 4 p.m. Monday at Cape Meadows Drive and Fitzgerald Street near Big Bend Road.
The project, which encompasses about 10 acres, is in the northeast part of the city. Inadequate storm-water removal in the area caused flooding, erosion and other problems.
Officials expect many of the runoff problems will be relieved after workers add new structures and repair the existing system. Improvements include installation of about 355 feet of storm sewers, replacement of about 415 square yards of pavement, storm inlets, junction manholes and other construction.
The more than $60,000 project will be completed by the Nip Kelley Equipment Co. and is expected to be finished by May.
