Alpha C. "Pete" Plumb Hutson, 89, of Cape Girardeau died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2010, at the Lutheran Home.

She was born July 23, 1921, in Allenville, to John Wesley and Dora Belle Gilder Surlet. She first married Burnett O. Plumb Sr., who preceded her in death Feb. 24, 1965.

They were parents of two sons, George Webster Plumb, who preceded her Aug. 20, 1991, and Burnett O. "Bunny" Plumb Jr., who preceded her Dec. 26, 2002.

She and Raymond D. Hutson were married July 14, 1951, in Piggott, Ark. He preceded her July 8, 2005.

Pete worked as a cook at the Spot Cafe and other restaurants on Main Street in the 1940s. She also worked at W.T. Grant in the Town Plaza, managed Sherman's Ladies Wear on Main Street, and later retired from Walmart.

Children were the joy of her life and she was affectionately known as "Grandma Pete" to many through the years, and did baby-sitting until she became ill in 2008.

Survivors include two daughters-in-law, Dorothy "Dottie" Plumb and Donna Plumb of Cape Girardeau; four grandchildren, Sheila (Howard) Glosson of Nashville, Tenn., Laura Walz of Cape Girardeau, Julie (Dane) Stausing of Scott City, Holly (Darrin) Sides of Cape Girardeau; seven great-grandchildren, Ginna Glosson of Charlotte, N.C., Eva (Brad) Wright of Seattle, Casey (Megan) Glosson of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Jace Walz of Cape Girardeau, Sierra Sides and Xander and Tabor Stausing of Scott City; and a great-great-grandson, Neal Wright of Seattle.

Also two special people she helped raise, Joe Magrabe of Cape Girardeau and Sierra Paige Hawkins of Scott City; two sisters, Ada Belle King and Mary Lou Lowes of Cape Girardeau; and a brother, Ray W. Surlet of Patton, Mo.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Francis Junior Surlet and Herbert Wesley Surlet, and an infant sister, Dorothy Marie Surlet.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Chapel. The funeral will begin at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Janet Hopkins officiating. Burial will be in Cape County Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Teen Challenge International Mid-America, P.O. Box 1089, Cape Girardeau, MO 63702.
