EAST PRAIRIE, Mo. -- Betty J. Johnson, 68, of East Prairie died Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2000 at Southeast Missouri Hospital.

She was born May 26, 1932, in Risco, Mo., daughter of the late Sam and Frances Troutt Jones. She and Carey G. Johnson were married Oct. 31, 1950, at Piggott, Ark.

Johnson had lived in Mississippi County most of her life. She was the director of the Mississippi County Retired Senior Volunteer Program and was instrumental in its creation. Having served as the director for 20 years, she retired in 1993. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in East Prairie, Mo.

Survivors include her husband; a son, William Johnson of Sikeston, Mo.; three daughters, Karen Walker of Lake Ozark, Mo., Tracy Smith of Dexter, Mo., and Jill Chance of Sikeston; a brother, Bill Jones of Apache Junction, Ariz.; a sister, Marian Cuff of Kennett, Mo.; 12 grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by a brother and sister.

Friends may call Shelby Funeral Home in East Prairie from 5-9 p.m.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the Shelby Chapel. Brother Burl Britt will officiate, with burial at Dogwood Cemetery.
