Edna E. Rogers, 93, of Cape Girardeau passed away Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009, at Chateau Girardeau, where she had lived since 1997.
She was born Feb. 20, 1915, in Oran, Mo., daughter of Raymond and Gertrude Sturgeon Evans. In 1939 she married M.W. Johnson, who died in 1944 in Oklahoma City. She and William K. Rogers were married June 15, 1952. He died Jan. 21, 1982.
Rogers graduated from Advance, Mo., High School in 1931, Southeast Missouri State University in 1937, and received her master's degree from the University of Iowa in 1948.
Throughout her early adult life she was employed at Douglas Aircraft in Tulsa, Okla., in tool design, drafting and blue prints, and during World War II at Douglas Aircraft in Topeka, Kan., in tool design, and did drafting a year at Dazey Corp.
Her teaching career started in various schools in Southeast Missouri. She taught five years of high school physical education in Tucson, Ariz., taught a summer session at Southeast Missouri State University and a summer at the college in Maryville, Mo. She then taught physical education at Hazelwood High School in St. Louis County 11 years.
Gardening was one of her many interests. She and her husband had a large garden in St. Louis County, selling much produce to regular customers. In Cape Girardeau she continued doing a lot of gardening at the apartments where she lived and gardened many years at First Presbyterian Church until she had to retire in 2002.
In 1997 she moved to Chateau Girardeau, where she resided until her death. She was a member of Missouri Retired Teachers Association, Southeast Missouri Hospital Auxiliary, Southeast Missouri Hospital Foundation, Southeast Missouri State University Copper Dome Society and First Presbyterian Church. She served through Meals on Wheels 19 years, 13 of which she was the coordinator for First Presbyterian Church.
Several cousins survive in the area.
Previously deceased are her parents, her husbands and her brother, Louis Raymond Evans.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to service time Monday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home.
The service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Paul Kabo officiating. Burial will be in Cape County Memorial Park.
