Elda Esther Haertling, 83, of Cape Girardeau died Friday, Aug. 11, 2000, at the Lutheran Home.

She was born May 24, 1917, in Altenburg, Mo., daughter of Arthur and Ada Kaufman Buck. She and Clarence R. Haertling were married Oct. 10, 1937, in Altenburg.

Haertling was a sales clerk at Milady's Dress Shop 25 years.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and an associate member of Zion Lutheran Church in Fort Myers, Fla. Other memberships include: Trinity Ladies Aid, Board of Trustee Historical Society of Cape Girardeau, Lutheran Nursing Home Auxiliary, Southeast Missouri Hospital Association, Foundation and Auxiliary.

Haertling was past vice president of Southeast Hospital Auxiliary, co-chairman of the auxiliary's flea market and bazaar, Mended Hearts, Retired Senior Volunteer Program, VFW Auxiliary, Meals on Wheels and volunteer at Missouri Veterans Home.

She was a member of Cape Coral, Fla., Rotary Ann Club and Zion Guild of Zion Lutheran Church in Fort Myers. She was honored with the Board of Trustees Special Service Award for service as a member of the hospital auxiliary and association.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Larry L. Haertling and Dennis R. Haertling of Cape Girardeau; a sister, Lorine Palisch of Cape Girardeau; two grandsons, Greg Haertling of Dallas, Texas, Brad Haertling of Jackson, Mo.; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Elmer Buck.

Friends may call at Ford and Sons Mt. Auburn Chapel from 4-8 p.m. Sunday.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Douglas Breite officiating. Burial will be in Cape County Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to Living Hope, Southeast Missouri Hospital Auxiliary, or Southeast Missouri Hospital Foundation.
