POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- 1st Sgt. (Ret.) Gerald Keith Moore, 67, of Poplar Bluff passed away surrounded by his loved ones on Monday, June 20, 2016, at Southeast Hospital in Cape Girardeau.

He was born Sept. 15, 1948, at Zalma, Missouri, the son of Gay Hershel Moore and Geraldine Smith McCullough.

Gerald was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He retired after 20 years of service. He served two tours in Vietnam, one tour in Korea, one tour in Alaska and finished his military career in Germany.

He was a highly decorated military police officer. He received many honors and awards, including but not limited to the Army Service Ribbon, Humanitarian Service Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon-1, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal-5, Non-commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon-3, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal-6 and Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry.

He then returned home and worked at the U.S. Post Office for 16 years until his retirement.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Moore of the home; two daughters, Elizabeth Moore of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Phoebe Roper of Advance, Missouri; two stepsons, Joe Highley of Newark, Ohio, and Jeff Highley of Ozark, Missouri; three brothers, Virgil Moore of Zalma and Dennis and Randy Moore, both of Dupo, Illinois; two sisters, Karen Hazel of Sturdivant, Missouri, and Rhonda Hess of Advance; five grandsons, Morgan and Colbey Roper and Evan, Mason and Josh Highley; a granddaughter, Valerie Highly; and a host of other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ronnie Moore; a stepson, Fred Highly; and a grandson, Caleb Highley.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Morgan Funeral Chapel in Advance.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Dale Wiseman officiating.

Burial will follow at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield, with full military rites.
