Harlan Joseph Mueller, 74, 515 Cordelia, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 1993, at Southeast Missouri Hospital.

He was born Sept. 24, 1918, at Wittenberg, son of Arthur S. and Ella Nischwitz Mueller. He and Mildred Louise Buck were married June 21, 1942, at Altenburg.

Mueller attended Southeast Missouri State University, and was an aircraft mechanic with the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He owned and operated a Ben Franklin store on Broadway, and then with his wife owned and operated the Harlan J. Mueller Insurance Agency more than 40 years. He represented a number of insurance companies, including Great Central Insurance of Peoria, Ill., Cape Mutual, and Barton County Mutual. He retired in 1992.

Mueller was a charter member of Exchange Club and had been a member more than 30 years. He had served as president, member of the board of directors, and was active in its philanthropic activities.

He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, served in various positions, and had been president of its Men's Club. He was a Boy Scout leader and supporter, and was honored by the Southeast Missouri Council in 1969 with the Order of Merit award. He was also an active leader in scouting programs sponsored by Trinity Church.

Mueller was a member of American Legion, Executive Club, Southeast Missouri Hospital Association, and former member of the Chamber of Commerce.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, John Mueller of Tampa, Fla., Thomas Mueller of Cape Girardeau; a sister, Audrey Marconi of St. Louis; two grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by three brothers.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Church. The Rev. David Dissen will officiate, with burial in Memorial Park.

Friends may call at Ford and Sons Mt. Auburn Chapel from 4-8 p.m. today.
