CAIRO, Ill. -- Herbert Eugene "Duke" Washam, 59, of Cairo died Tuesday, May 24, 2005, at Veteran Affairs Medical Center in Marion, Ill.
He was born Sept. 24, 1945, in Cairo, son of C.W. "Slick" and Mary M. Stevens. He and Yukie "Hiromi" Tamaki were married Sept. 6, 1967, in Naha, Okinawa.
Washam was owner and operator of Turf Pizza and Smith and Groves Tavern. He also served with Cairo Police Department. He was a member of Cairo Baptist Church, Cairo Elks Lodge 651, and a life member of Cairo VFW Post 2649.
He served with the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Lisa Rundles of Wickliffe, Ky.; a son, Stephen Washam of Cairo; a brother, Billy Washam of Miller City, Ill.; and seven grandchildren.
Friends may call at Barkett Funeral Home in Cairo from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Cairo Baptist Church, with Dr. Larry Potts officiating. Burial will be in Spencer Heights Cemetery in Mounds, Ill., with military honors by Pulaski County Memorial VFW Post 8891 of Mounds.
