John W. Reid, 93, of Cape Girardeau died Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001, at Chateau Health Center.

He was born Feb. 13, 1908, about 1 1/2 miles east of Oak Ridge, Mo., son of William Scott and Marzilla Malone Reid. He and Grace Ellis were married Jan. 22, 1938, in Bardwell, Ky.

Mr. Reid graduated from Oak Ridge High School in 1927 and attended Southeast Missouri State University where he lettered in baseball.

He retired Dec. 25, 1971, after 27 years as an agent with the Internal Revenue Service. In his earlier years he taught school six years, which included four years in rural schools of Cape Girardeau County and two years as principal of the elementary school at Blodgett, Mo.

When the office of county treasurer was re-established in 1937, he was appointed by Gov. Lloyd C. Stark to serve as Cape Girardeau County treasurer until the next general election in 1938. He then was elected to serve the following four-year term ending Dec. 31, 1942.

Mr. Reid was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

An only child, John W. Reid II, a prominent attorney of Fredericktown, Mo., died in a motor vehicle accident Jan. 28, 1991. A sister, Mrs. Alyce Sudbrack, also preceded.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Susan E. Reid; three grandsons, John W. Reid III of Coppell, Texas, Robert Scott Reid of Farmington, Mo., Patrick David Reid of Owensville, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, at Ford and Sons Mt. Auburn Chapel.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at the chapel. Dr. Clayton Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Cape County Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Centenary United Methodist Church.
