Funeral service for Lawrence O. Kassel, 1311 Carolyn, will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at Ford and Sons Mt. Auburn Chapel. The Rev. Mark Martin will officiate, with burial in Memorial Park.

Kassel, 71, died Sunday, March 3, 1996, at Cape Girardeau Nursing Center.

He was born March 16, 1924, in Cape Girardeau, son of Charles G. and Amanda D. Schlimme Kassel. He and Nadine L. Sams were married Jan. 1, 1954. She died Nov. 25, 1959. He and Jerry Starzinger Godwin were married June 10, 1978.

Kassel worked on the Mississippi River 36 years, and was a chief engineer with General Dynamics Barge Line a number of years.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Egypt Mills, where he served as church treasurer. He also was a member of VFW Post 3838, American Legion Post 63, Disabled American Veterans, and Teamsters Local.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Michael Kassel of Cape Girardeau; two daughters, Ann Lunsford and Jane Moore of Bartlesville, Okla.; four sisters, Edna Hafner, Erma Harmon and Dorothy McLain, all of Cape Girardeau, Hazel McLain of St. Louis, and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
