Margaret Hafstad, 82, of Rockdale, Wis., died Tuesday, May 2, 1995, at her home. She was born May 14, 1912, in Cape Girardeau, daughter of Jeptha and Stella Shanks Riggs. She and George E. Hafstad were married Oct. 26, 1940. He died in 1988. Hafstad graduated from Southeast Missouri State University in 1933, and received a master's degree in geography from the University of Chicago in 1935...

Margaret Hafstad, 82, of Rockdale, Wis., died Tuesday, May 2, 1995, at her home.

She was born May 14, 1912, in Cape Girardeau, daughter of Jeptha and Stella Shanks Riggs. She and George E. Hafstad were married Oct. 26, 1940. He died in 1988.

Hafstad graduated from Southeast Missouri State University in 1933, and received a master's degree in geography from the University of Chicago in 1935.

She taught at colleges in Missouri and Oklahoma prior to her marriage. She and her husband published a textbook "Use Without Waste" in 1944. She was archivist at the State Historical Society of Wisconsin from 1959-69.

The Hafstads moved to Middleton, Wis., in 1950, and then to Rockdale in 1969.

Survivors include two daughters, Ellen Hoffman of Toronto, Canada, Karen Hafstad of Rockdale; a sister, Ruth Finnegan of Boston, Mass.; a brother, John Riggs of Lewes, Del., and a granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by a brother.

Friends may call at the Hafstad home from 2-4 p.m. Saturday.

There is no funeral service.

Nitardy Funeral Home in Cambridge, Wis., is in charge of arrangements.
