Martin Thomas Halter, 90, of Cape Girardeau and formerly of Charleston, Mo., died Monday, Dec. 10, 2007, at Auburn Creek Care Center in Cape Girardeau.

He was born March 5, 1917, in Charleston, son of Michael H. and Mary E. Carlisle Halter. He and Regina H. "Jean" Chambers were married June 2, 1940. She died Jan. 17, 1995.

Halter was a farmer and manager of the Alfalfa Mill in Tiptonville, Tenn., until returning to Charleston in 1951, when he and his brother Norbert established Halter Brothers Construction. He was a building contractor until retirement and a member of St. Henry Catholic Church.

Survivors include a son, Gary Halter of Cape Girardeau; a daughter, Carole Calvin of Cape Girardeau; a brother, Norbert Halter of Charleston; a sister, Mary Ellen Stricker of Charleston; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, a great-grandson, five brothers and five sisters.

Friends may call from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston.

Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Friday at the St. Henry Catholic Church in Charleston, with Monsignor Richard Rolwing officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery near Charleston.
