COSHOCTON, Ohio -- Melvin Eugene Schlegel, 85, of Coshocton passed away Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2021.

He was born Dec. 1, 1935, in Cape Girardeau to the late Henry and Meyhulda Geiser Schlegel. On May 4, 1957, he married the love of his life, Virginia Walters Schlegel, who preceded him in death Oct. 21, 2010.

Melvin worked for Nationwide Insurance for several years. He then worked for Peabody Coal as a coal miner for many years before retiring. Then, after retirement, Melvin worked part time at South Lawn Elementary as a custodian.

Melvin was a member of Burt Avenue Wesleyan Church. He loved to golf and bowl and taught junior bowling for many years. He enjoyed woodworking and making furniture and was a "Jack of all trades." He loved spending time with his family and enjoyed watching all his grandchildren during their sporting events.

He is survived by his daughter, Cynthia (Mark) Carroll of Coshocton; five grandchildren, Kacey (Brandon) Sturtz, Kyle (Tuong Doan) Carroll, Patrick (Ann) Carroll, Ashley House and Samantha (Lane Hale) Schlegel; nine great-grandchildren, Trevius Wegener, Talia House, Tucker House, Shane Hale, Pressly Sturtz, Gabriella Sturtz, Xavier Sturtz, Ella Carroll and Addison Carroll; sister, Erna Duckworth of Nebraska; and brother, William (Lavada) Schlegel of Missouri.

Along with his parents and wife of 53 years, Melvin was preceded in death by his son, Melvin Scott Schlegel, who passed away in 2013; his siblings, Richard, Alvin, Clarence and Albert Schlegel, Frieda Wendel, Vanita Randal, Marie Nagel and Mildred Brugger.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Oct. 30 at Burt Avenue Wesleyan Church with Pastor Rod Uhlig officiating. Burial will follow at South Lawn Cemetery.

For those who wish, memorial donations may be made in Melvin's name to Burt Avenue Wesleyan Church or to Community Hospice.
