Morna Mildred Mills Jordan, 90, died peacefully Thursday, Jan. 7, 2016, at The Arbors at Auburn Creek in Cape Girardeau.
Morna was born May 14, 1925, in Burrton, Kansas, with her twin brother, Merle. She was raised by her parents, Percy and Doris Vansickle Mills, on an acreage outside of Burrton, where she attended high school with her three brothers and one sister. While attending Phillips University, she met Robert Ray Jordan, whom she married Aug. 24, 1947.
Morna was a faithful servant to various Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) congregations in Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri and Kansas, sharing her husband's ministry for more than 50 years. Throughout her life, she was quite active in Christian education for all ages, Christian Women's Fellowship and outreach to the poor and developmentally disabled through her work at a thrift shop. She enjoyed editing the Baxter Springs Citizen. She faithfully hand-starched her husband's white shirts, edited his sermons, prepared communion, taught Sunday school and still had energy to make the Sunday roast. She enjoyed various handcrafts, a hobby she passed along to her daughter, Connie. She was an alto in the church choir, teaching her son, Stephen, harmony at an early age.
She is survived by her daughter, Connie (Dale) Jordan Letzig Brockhausen of Raymore, Missouri, and son, Dr. Stephen (Carla) Jordan of Cape Girardeau. She has five grandchildren, James Letzig, Jason Letzig, Beau Jordan, Michael Jordan and Lillian Jordan; four great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Morna was preceded in death by her husband, brothers and sisters, and many of her dear friends.
The family plans a private celebration of her life at a later date. Morna's body will be laid to rest next to her husband in Phillipsburg, Kansas.
Gifts and memorials may be sent to Abbey Road Christian Church, 2411 Abbey Road, Cape Girardeau, MO 63701.
The family would like to thank all of the dedicated staff who lovingly treated her as family while she lived at Auburn Creek Assisted Living and The Arbors. The family also is grateful for the comfort provided by Crown Hospice. Finally, a special "thank you" to saints among us, Lavetta Bratton, Kilja Israel and pastors Rodger Kiepe and Ron Routledge, who faithfully represented Abbey Road Christian in their frequent shut-in ministry.
