POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- Robert Schlitt, 85, of Poplar Bluff died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012, at his home.
Robert was born June 28, 1927, in Oran, Mo. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and retired from the Social Security Administration as assistant manager after 34 years. He had worked at the employment office in Sikeston, Mo., for nine years before that. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and served as a 4th Degree Honor Guard. He also served on the Poplar Bluff Credit Union board of directors for 15 years. He was president of the Sacred Heart School Board, a member of Sacred Heart Parish Council finance committee, and a member of the board of directors of the St. Vincent DePaul Society. Robert enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, wine making and traveling. He was also an avid Three Rivers College Raiders fan. Robert and Theresa always followed the team on the road and to the national tournament. His family was his life and he enjoyed every get-together he could get to.
On June 17, 1950, he married Theresa Todt in Oran at Guardian Angel Catholic Church. She survives.
Other survivors include seven children, Carol Schlitt of St. Louis, Barbara (Gerry) Hoeing of St. Louis, Linda (Larry) Hurst of Poplar Bluff, John Schlitt of Poplar Bluff, Diane (Mike) Hirtz of Glennonville, Mo., Mary Schlitt of Poplar Bluff and Deborah (Chad) Landry of Iwakuni, Japan; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mildred Burnett, Alma Jean Gouge, Mary Stoverink, Georgia Neal; and one brother, Harold Schlitt.
His parents, Otto and Josephine Dohogne Schlitt; two brothers, Leon and Carl "Butch" Schlitt; and one granddaughter, Sarah Lange, also preceded Mr. Schlitt in death.
A prayer service will begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Cotrell Funeral Chapel in Poplar Bluff with visitation until 8 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with Father David Coon officiating. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to Sacred Heart School or St. Vincent DePaul Society.
