A private memorial service for Theodore R. Holmes of Cape Girardeau will be held Wednesday at Memorial Park Mausoleum. The Rev. Robert Klein will officiate.

Holmes, 78, died Saturday, June 5, 1999, at the Lutheran Home.

He was born Sept. 22, 1920, in Essex, Iowa, son of Charles and Bessie Johnson Holmes. He and Carol J. Eiler were married July 22, 1951, in Red Oak, Iowa.

Holmes was employed 42 years at Brown Shoe Fit Co., retiring as manager in 1983. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was awarded a Purple Heart and Silver Star.

Holmes was a charter member of St. Mark Lutheran Church, and served as treasurer of the church council. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, VFW Post 3838, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 16, and American Legion Post 63.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Steven Holmes of Cape Girardeau; a daughter, Cynthia Austin of Cape Girardeau; two brothers, Raymond Holmes of Essex, Iowa, Paul Holmes of Longmont, Colo.; two sisters, Amy Bruland of Denver, Colo., Pauline Frizell of Omaha, Neb.; and a grandchild.

Holmes was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.
