Wayne Allen Smith, 73, of Cape Girardeau died Sunday, May 31, 2009, at Landmark Hospital.

He was born Aug. 23, 1935, in Dallas, son of Ernest Edward and Lena Caroline Lee Smith. He and Betty Lois Smith were married Sept. 10, 1957, in Hernando, Miss.

Smith served 20 years in the U.S. Navy. He worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. a few years and later was employed by and retired from Procter & Gamble.

He was active in bowling, golfing, and was a former pitcher for the Fast Pitch Softball League. He was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church and was involved in church work. He was a member of VFW Post 3838.

Survivors include his wife, Betty L. Smith of Cape Girardeau; a son, Michael Wayne Smith of Cape Girardeau; a daughter, Melody Ann Boyd and husband Todd of Lake Jackson, Texas; a brother, Walter E. Smith of Germany; two sisters, Loyce McDonald of Grand Prairie, Texas, and Joyce Barlow of Emory, Texas; four grandchildren, Tara (Matt) Glastetter, Amber (Cory) Popp, Shannon Smith and Morgan Boyd; and three great-grandchildren, Natalie Popp, Layla Popp and Alexender Matthew Glastetter.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Lewis Todd officiating. Burial will be in Missouri State Veterans Cemetery at Bloomfield, with military honors provided by VFW Post 3838.
