On Sunday, millions of Christians around the world celebrated Easter Sunday, also known as Resurrection Sunday. It's a time to remember the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross and his resurrection from the grave.
Something special this year leading up to Easter was the five-week miniseries "The Bible." Produced by "Touched by an Angel" star Roma Downey and her husband Mark Burnett, producer of "The Voice" and "Survivor," the series told a number of stories from the Bible, beginning with creation and concluding Sunday night with the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus and even part of Revelation.
Two observations from the series:
No. 1: This was an impressive production which in large part stayed close to scripture and shared the message of the gospel. From the special effects to the acting, narration and music, the series captured the attention of millions.
No. 2: There's a market for Christian films and other family-friendly entertainment. More than 13 million people saw the first episode, and millions tuned in week after week. The first week's benchmark made it the most-viewed cable entertainment series of the year.
The truth is many people want to watch programs with a faith dynamic. "The Bible" miniseries is a great example. Other movies like "Facing the Giants," "The Blind Side" and "Courageous" have been successful. If trivia is your thing, check out "The American Bible Challenge" on the Game Show Network.
It appears more films are in the works to follow the success of "The Bible." We certainly hope so. In today's environment, it's important to have quality entertainment with a good message.
